Quality of Life
Zanesville
was founded in 1797 by John McIntire and is located on Interstate 70
just fifty miles east of Columbus, Ohio. Zanesville, Ohio is the
county seat and the largest city in Muskingum County with a
population of approx. 25,586 (County population approx.84,585).
Zanesville,
Ohio is noted for it’s unique Y shaped bridge, which spans the
confluence of the Licking and Muskingum Rivers. The current
structure is the fifth Y Bridge since 1814 and is the only Y Bridge
in the United States. Amelia Earhart called Zanesville the “the
most recognizable city in the country”, referring to the Y Bridge’s
usefulness as navigational aid to pilots. Zanesville has a rich
pottery history and at one time was known as “Clay City” and as
the “Pottery Capital of the World”, which are traditions that
continue to this day. Local Artist Mary Ann Bucci did a wonderful
painting of many of the local church steeples, which indicates the
many churches represented in the area. There is a wonderful art
museum in Zanesville, the Zane Grey Museum located in Muskingum
County, the John and Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord, other
museums, as well as The Wilds. The County offers State Parks

Limits the local hospital has a walking trail and there are several

land artery to the West. The National Road stretched from Cumberland,
MD. to Vandalia, IL. Begun in 1806, the "Main Street of America"
was the only significant land link between east coast and western
frontier in the early 19th century. A 136 foot diorama of the
National Road plus many objects illustrate this theme. Second is
Zane Grey, the "Father of the Adult Western." The
Zanesville author wrote more than 80 books. His study is recreated
plus many manuscripts and other memorabilia are displayed. Finally,
a central portion of the museum is devoted to Ohio art pottery.
